10AB Piney Woods
A piece of American architecture history, and you can sleep in it. Piney Woods isn’t just another cabin. It was designed in the late 1960s by Allen Lape “Davy” Davison, right-hand man to William Wesley Peters at Taliesin Associated Architects. That’s the firm Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentices formed to carry on his work. Davy designed it for his brother Bill as a family mountain retreat, and named it Piney Woods after the brothers’ childhood cabin in New York. True to its name, it sits tucked among tall trees near the top of Ski View Drive, a private hideaway about 3.5 miles from downtown Gatlinburg that sleeps 14.
Wright’s ideas, in the Smokies. You’ll see Taliesin’s “organic architecture” everywhere you look. The house was laid out on Taliesin’s signature 4-foot-4-inch square grid. A dramatic winged roofline sweeps out over stacked-stone walls. Inside, a massive stone fireplace wall rises from the conversation area all the way to the roof. Walls of floor-to-ceiling glass meet at a peak and seem to float, wrapping the great room in the surrounding forest, the way Wright believed a home should connect to nature. Timber posts, a beamed ceiling, warm wood paneling and built-in furniture complete the look. A sunroom wrapped in glass is the perfect spot for morning coffee among the trees.
The place to bring everyone. Family reunions, church retreats, scout troops, several families traveling together: Piney Woods was made for groups. The great room has room for everyone to gather, with multiple seating areas, comfortable sofas and built-in benches for game nights. The full kitchen has a dishwasher and everything you need to cook for a crowd.
Sleeping space for 14. Upstairs, rooms with built-in bunk beds and twin beds are perfect for kids, cousins or a youth group, and a queen bedroom with a wall of windows suits the grown-ups. Downstairs, a second queen bedroom sits beside a stone wall and fireplace, and a sleeper sofa adds room for more. Upstairs has a full bath connected to a half bath, with another bathroom downstairs.
Easy for big groups. There are no exterior steps, and the flat driveway has ample parking for several cars. An in-unit washer and dryer, central air, and charcoal grill make big-group stays easy.
